- Bank of Canada – Credit Conditions – Household Credit – According to the Bank of Canada, the amount of National Housing Act Mortgage-Backed Securities outstanding as of September 2009 was $281B. This reflects an increase of $89B (46.8%) in just twelve months. In comparison, the amount of mortgage credit on the books of Canadian Chartered Banks was $459B, a decrease of $27.1B (-5.6%) in the last twelve months. This is actually a slight improvement from the numbers posted for August. However, remember that the CMHC also insures about 40% of the mortgages the banks hold.
