remapping your kinesis keyboard

I have an older model Kinesis Ergo keyboard.  If you’re a programmer and you don’t have one of these - get one.  It’s the best thing you’ll ever do for your wrists.  They cost about $450-500 CAD or so, but they’re worth every penny.

Here’s instructions for mapping the home and page up keys to be the Apple key or the Windows key depending on your particular OS religion.

  1. ❑ Press the “Keypad” button (right side function key set). You will hear a double tone from the keyboard, indicating the keypad is being turned on.
  2. ❑ Hold down the “Program” key (right side function key set) and tap F12.
  3. ❑ Keyboard lights will begin flashing rapidly, waiting for you to select a source action.
  4. ❑ Tap the letter “n” (assuming QWERTY layout). Keyboard lights will continue flashing, but slowly (waiting for you to select a destination).
  5. ❑ Tap the “Home” key. Lights will resume flashing rapidly.
  6. ❑ Tap the letter “n” again
  7. ❑ Tap the “page up” key.
  8. ❑ The lights should be flashing rapidly.
  9. ❑ Tap the letter “n” again. Keyboard lights will continue flashing, but slowly (waiting for you to select a destination).
  10. ❑ Tap the “Keypad” button. You will hear a single “beep” as the keypad layer is turned off.
  11. ❑ Now tap the “Home” key. Lights will resume flashing rapidly.
  12. ❑ The “Home” key is now mapped to the Mac “Command” key.
  13. ❑ Tap the “Keypad” button. You will hear a double “beep” as the keypad layer is turned on.
  14. ❑ Tap the letter “n” again.
  15. ❑ Tap the “Keypad” button. You will hear a single “beep” as the keypad layer is turned off.
  16. ❑ Now tap the “Pageup” key. Lights will resume flashing rapidly.
  17. ❑ The “Pageup” key is now mapped to the mac “Command” key
  18. ❑ Hold down the “Program” key (right side function key set) and tap F12.
  19. ❑ Keyboard lights will stop flashing as you exit from remapping mode. The keypad LED should be off. Test the home and pageup keys with the keypad off and on the be sure they always act as Mac “Command.”
